Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies and Production Systems

Content

The lecture provides a comprehensive understanding of sustainable manufacturing processes and production systems. It begins by introducing the fundamentals of sustainability, life cycle assessment, and the concept of absolute sustainability. Subsequently, product development and material selection are addressed, which are closely linked to the manufacturing processes presented thereafter. After covering production planning and control as well as supply chain management, the lecture concludes with a discussion of the circular economy.
Across all chapters, a strong emphasis is placed on sustainability, highlighting and discussing potential improvements and opportunities. The entire lecture is structured around application-oriented case studies, emphasizing the practical relevance of the methods presented.

Learning Outcomes:

After successfully completing the course, students are able to work independently and in teams to ...

  • discuss and explain concepts, relationships, and models of sustainable manufacturing technologies and production systems
  • understand typical challenges faced by manufacturing companies in the context of life cycle assessments, product development, manufacturing technologies and production systems, as well as circular economy and sustainability
  • identify, evaluate, and classify sustainability potentials along the product life cycle
  • apply methods to address relevant problems in these areas and interpret the results
  • critically reflect on the methods learned and independently acquire additional methods beyond the course content.
